It is interesting to note that, when the term "broken heart" is used metaphorically, it relies on the assumption that human emotions are controlled by the heart (when in reality, of course, they are controlled by the brain). However, a few centuries ago, the liver was thought to control emotions (or "humors," as they were called then), but the term "liver ache" was never used.
